What Idols Don't Talk?

Have you ever read the scriptures and all of a sudden you see some sarcasm bleeding through?  Here is an example.

Habakuk 2:18-20

18“What profit is an idol
when its maker has shaped it,
a metal image, a teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
when he makes speechless idols!

19 Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake;
to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
and there is no breath at all in it.
 20But the LORD is in his holy temple;
let all the earth keep silence before him.”

We are good at crafting idols and giving them more life and attention than we do the Lord.  Preachers who still preach about idols will pick on sports, movie stars, music icons, etc  as examples of idols we worship and pay homage to, but preachers forget that they too have idols, perhaps not so obvious as the sports fan. What are their idols?  Their ministries!   Some pastors/christian authors and lecturers think that they are the only ones who have an anointing from God.  They will blast other leaders who in their opinion aren't doing it right, only to be guilty of the same kind of spirit of gluttony and self importance.  I know this may sound harsh and unbelievable, but I would say more than half of the people I have interviewed for various reasons over the years for radio programs have demonstrated tendencies of narcissism.  Narcissism is the very condition we are told to rid ourselve from if we are going to be disciples of Christ. How can we say we have denied ourselves, picked up our cross and are  following Him, when most of the time we spend in promoting our ministires and our own spin on the gospel?  Now come on, let's be honest here.  Where does Christ get the credit in all of this?  Has Christianity become a business only, and that business is selling my wares, books, cd's and other Jesus junk no one needs?  Perhaps this is one of the reasons the church in the western world is so weak and impotent in making a difference in our society.  We have become just like the rest of the world, grapping all the gusto we can, from whoever we can.  I know you might think I am being too negative or too judgmental, but why can't we talk about it?  Why do we always have to hide our dirty laundry, and play hide and seek with the truth?  Idols are things that get in the way of really worshipping and serving the Lord in Spirit and in truth, and ministries are often the biggest hindrance to real worship because they get in the way.  I spent too many years worshipping the ministry, letting it drive my life, set the priorities, and filling my time with it's endless needs. Sorry, ministry is only a tool, to be used according to the need at hand, and not the driving, all consuming idol it can become to those who let it.

Keeping it honest and truthful...K
