How Do We Stop A Runaway Train?

In 2010 Denzel Washington starred in a movie called “Unstoppable” which was loosely based on the real-life CSX 8888 incident, about a runaway freight train. The story was about two guys who had to do extraordinary things to successfully stop the train and avoid disaster.

The same must be true when we are faced with evil in our land that does not care about human life. Robert D. Bowers went into a Pittsburgh synagogue last Saturday and shot and killed 11 people and wounded another 6 and is a microcosm of a world gone mad.

This kind of crisis is like a runaway train in the respect that there are no easy ways to stop it. All the politicians, the President, the news pundits; all were saying the same thing, “this needs to stop, and we need to stop it.”

I believe the President came the closest to finding a way to at least slow this train down, and that is by having armed guards at all public gatherings of people. This process will eliminate the soft targets as easy prey for people who are determined to kill people. This will only curb the problem, however, because people who are mentally unstable will continue to find ways to disrupt our lives by the constant threat of acting out their hatred in their lives.

What you won’t hear in the secular media is how to deal with the evil. It is one thing to simply call something evil, but it’s another to understand evil and how it works. The runaway train of evil in our society can only be stopped by some intentional moves on behalf of people. This will involve laws and protection procedures to be implemented, but the real answer is a spiritual revival, which will stop this train dead in its tracks.

Evil is like a bully. Evil will pick on vulnerable and unsuspecting people. Americans are not accustomed to having gunfire in their communities and are totally unprepared for a crisis like this. The Bible tells us that if we resist the devil, he will flee from us.

James 4:7 “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

That means we prepare ourselves against evil by submitting to God, and when that doesn’t happen in our land, it opens the door for all of us to be soft targets for the evil one.

Evil can be avoided by asking God to lead us not into temptation but to deliver us from evil. Asking God to identify and deliver us from the evil practices in our own lives, and then strengthening our personal behavior to stand against the evil in our own communities - this could be a start.

Jesus told us that evil comes from within, in Mark 7:21-23

For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Laws alone cannot stop this runaway train of evil, nor can simply protecting ourselves by security measures stop it. It cannot be stopped because it dwells within us. It is the nature of sin to capture a person’s life by what they want and believe. All sin is selfish and self-destructive, and it leads to unrighteousness that can be performed by anyone who is called a human being.

So how do you protect yourself against a disease that has infected all of us?  You can’t and that’s the point of the runaway train. That train is all of us; it’s you and it’s me, and the only way for this train to stop is through Jesus Christ and the forgiveness of sins.

Ezekiel 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Psalm 51:10
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Evil is only defeated with a changed heart that is submitted to God and filled with His Word. Evil thrives where God is absent, and we in America have allowed this runaway train to take place because we have rejected Him. We will never stop these tragic events from happening until we as individuals, we as a community, and we as a nation decide that faith in God is our only hope, and ask God for His protection and His wisdom to return us to back to His ways.

Keeping it honest and truthful…K
