Do Not Learn The Way Of The Nations

The prophet Jeremiah has so much to say to our day. He is bold in his declarations and he is not afraid to speak to the issues of his day. I like that in a leader. Someone who is not like all the other prophets who just say things they know people want to hear. Jeremiah was clear in Chapter 10, when he said,  “Do not learn the way of the nations, and do not be terrified by the signs of the heavens.”

A little later in the same chapter he said, “that the customs of the people are delusion, and that the shepherds have become stupid and have not sought the Lord.”

So it was obvious to Jeremiah that there were two problems with Israel:

  1. They looked and behaved more like the nations around them than they did in representing God.
  2. Their leaders were leading them, but they did not consult the Lord on the direction.

Sound familiar?

In the second chapter Jeremiah outlined his book by telling his readers that Israel was guilty of two things (Jeremiah 2:23):

  1. God’s people have forsaken Him as God.
  2. God’s people have crafted for themselves new gods, replacing Him.

Again, fairly familiar to what we find throughout history, including our own day.

The last days will be worse than any time in the past due to several factors:

  1. God’s people are not being warned about the significance of forsaking Him. The nations, or the culture around us has a great deal of influence helping us to drift further away from God and His ways. When the Bible says that the last days prior to Christ’s return will be so bad that unless God cuts the days short, it would sweep away all godly people, are the days we find ourselves in. He also said that those days would be like the days of Noah. When you think of it, there were few people who made it into the ark.  Only Noah’s family was saved.  So, if the last days will be like the days of Noah, many people will be slipping away into unbelief in the last days.
  2. One of the other factors making the last days darker than in the past is that people will be ignorant of God’s Word. The prophet Amos tells us that there will be a famine of God’s Word in the land. Today I think we hear the same strain of God’s Word being preached. It is not that people don’t reference God’s Word, they do; they reference God’s mercy and love, but they don’t take that message to its conclusion. If people reject God’s offer of love and mercy, they will come face to face with His judgment. Jesus Christ today is known for His love, and people who follow Him are attracted to this dimension of receiving His unconditional mercy. Yet the prophets were continually trying to get the attention of God’s people because they had drifted away from God to the point their lips praised Him, but in reality their hearts were far from Him.

Isaiah 29:13 “And so the Lord says, "These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.”

Darkness prevails when the light grows dim. I sense this is the direction the Western Church is headed unless something changes and we start the recovery process.

The prophet Amos tells Israel what that recovery process is in chapter five of Amos:

For thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:

“Seek me and live;but do not seek Bethel,
and do not enter into Gilgalor cross over to Beersheba;
for Gilgal shall surely go into exile, and Bethel shall come to nothing.”
Seek the Lord and live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel”

The prophet is basically telling Israel, don’t go to the religious sites and seek some kind of religious ritual. Seek the Lord, and He will restore you completely.

This has been the message of this blog, we have sinned and fallen short, and now it’s time to return to Him.  No matter how far someone has drifted away from God, you still have a chance to return and be restored. Many lives are asleep in the light, and it’s time to awake and realize how close we are to being in Noah’s days.

Keeping it honest and truthful…..K
