The Danger of Being A Conservative

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order.45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”

-Matthew 12:43-45

Just being a conservative today can get you the disdain of co-workers or worse yet, the hatred of the extended family. However, there is something more insidious and dangerous in being a conservative, and that is being one without Jesus. Conservative ideals are closely aligned with Biblical principles and the values of the Bible are often the foundation of many conservative principles. Yet, without the Bible being the source of our conservative values, we are no better off than the rich young ruler Jesus confronted in Mark 10.

“Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.”  -Mark 10:21-22

Following Jesus is not easy because it requires you to live your life differently than the people around you. It means that your good morals and good ideals are not enough to satisfy God’s requirements for being right with Him. Your conservative values may be the right perspective to have in the arena of public opinion today, but it does not make you a member of God’s Kingdom.

God’s Kingdom is revolutionary and it is a counter-cultural movement that ends up overtaking everything on this earth.  It takes over government, wealth, politics, medicine and education. It all becomes under the control of the God’s rule. You may not be familiar with this concept because it is not a commonly understood idea. Yet the Bible teaches that there will be a day that all nations will submit to God or be crushed. All rulers, all wealth barons, all educators, and all entertainers will bow a knee to Christ and confess Him as Lord.

Isaiah 60:12 “For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish; it will be utterly destroyed.

Romans 14:11 For the Scriptures say, "As surely as I live,' says the LORD, every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will confess and give praise to God.”

Although you may listen to talk radio and parrot what you hear other conservatives say about politics, our country, and the dangers of being a liberal, this doesn’t make you any closer to God just because the principles you believe in may be right. It is the same conclusion that comes out from the idea that good people go to heaven. It is dangerous being a conservative because we seem to have a righteous indignation going for us that places all liberals in the same vein: they are evil and want to destroy our freedoms. I hate the policies and ideologies of the left as much as any conservative, but I had to step back recently after hearing Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly talk about how our hatred for each other will turn violent and someone will be killed. We are so polarized right now in this country that we are already fighting another civil war. I had to ask myself what is the driving force in my life, my political point of view or my allegiance to the teachings of Christ? To show how far I may have drifted I asked myself how many liberal do I want in heaven?  All of them, or just a few of them? (Too many liberals anywhere would ruin even heaven!)  See, I can’t even say that with a straight face. Yet, my Biblical conviction is that all my so-called enemies should be encouraged to know Christ and come to faith. Do I spend more time pursuing a political or ideological argument with the left more than I do a Biblical, ‘come to the Kingdom’ revolution party? God’s Kingdom is radical - so radical that few people will decide to accept it’s foundational principles. Jesus told us that most people will take a road that is wide in scope and broad in values, but His Kingdom is narrow and has uncompromising values. There is room for all conservatives and all liberals in His kingdom and He doesn’t exclude people because of their point of view, He excludes people because of their unwillingness to accept Him as the Savior and Lord of this world. As a Christian I am a conservative voter, but my philosophy of life is based upon God’s Word and the principles of His Kingdom. The United States needs another lens to view the world, and it’s neither conservative nor liberal. Some would say it is too late for us to get a new corrected lens, but our job is to continue to make the case that the Kingdom of God is the next major player in the world of politics on planet earth.

I might add that as followers of Jesus Christ, we have also been enlisted by virtue of our faith to be campaign managers for His Kingdom….just sayin’!

Keeping it honest and truthful…..K
