What are Deepfakes?
The 21st century’s answer to Photoshopping, deepfakes use a form of artificial intelligence called deep learning to make images of fake events, hence the name deepfake. Want to put new words in a politician’s mouth, star in your favorite movie, or dance like a pro? Then it’s time to make a deepfake. What are they for? Many are pornographic. The AI firm Deeptrace found 15,000 deepfake videos online in September 2019, a near doubling over nine months. A staggering 96% were pornographic and 99% of those mapped faces from female celebrities on to porn stars. As new techniques allow unskilled people to make deepfakes with a handful of photos, fake videos are likely to spread beyond the celebrity world to fuel revenge porn. As Danielle Citron, a professor of law at Boston University, puts it: “Deepfake technology is being weaponized against women." Beyond the porn there's plenty of spoof, satire, and mischief. ~Bill Whitaker, 60 Minutes
Like so many other things in our technological world, we have found yet another way to scam the public with a fake. During the Trump presidency, we heard the term ‘fake news’ where his administration called out major news channels such as CNN for their bias on reporting the news. We all know how corrupt the news media is today, but now we have a companion to fake news … we have video technology that can make a fake copy of anyone, to say or do whatever they want.
I found the segment intriguing because of the ramifications of it. You are now able to make copies of politicians or celebrities and have them say anything as if it was true to persuade people to believe a lie. They are using artificial intelligence to perfect images of people and make avatars out of them for the purpose of promoting false narratives of disinformation. They are even able to make dead celebrities come back to life in an avatar image and take roles in movies as they did when they were alive.
So, why is this important to know? Just think … they could make a politician running for office say something racist or belittling to a people group, and that would be the end of their political career. Any kind of false narrative could be created by this new technology, and it apparently is protected by freedom of speech.
The Bible tells us that the greatest and darkest days the world has ever known are ahead of us. Many Christians believe we are entering those days, and that darkness will continue until Jesus comes back to this earth:
2 Timothy 3:13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
Today, many Americans don’t trust anyone, and it is getting worse. Who can you trust? We have learned through the pandemic just how political it has become, and it is hard not to believe there isn’t more behind the scenes that we are not being told about this virus and the vaccine. Then people start to resist the mandates because it appears to them that the government has gone too far in its authority to vaccinate everyone. I know the arguments from the other side as well, but regardless of what side you are on, it has developed into a huge problem of trust. This is the narrative that will continue. Confusion is the result of distrust. You don’t know whom to believe, and the Deepfake technology will only create more of this narrative.
Technology today has the green light to explore and create … look what it has developed already. No one will argue that the technology in cars, working from home, and all the medical advances we have been able to perform would not have happened if it were not for technology. But, as with anything mankind creates, it is a neutral invention until evil decides to use it against us.
This gives us all pause to think. If Deepfakes can image out something that is not real, can the same technology be used to influence an election by making numbers and ballots say something they were not intended to say? I am only speculating, but if images that aren’t real can look like they are real, where is the limit? We all know technology can be hacked. I know it would be hard to live without technology, but it will be technology that will one day rule the world. I believe the one world leader will use the 666 configuration in a way that prevents people from buying and selling. This reminds me of the censorship Facebook does when they disagree with a political or religious post.
Keep your eye on the Deepfakes. I believe it’s another way our enemy is trying to make something that is not true become truth with the hope we won’t notice.
Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction.
