Have We Lost Our Minds?

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Have we lost the ability to have a renewed mind, testing what is pleasing to God, and His will on earth?

When transgender model and activist Kenny Ethan Jones experienced his first period, he faced both physical and psychological pain. Initially, Jones, who had not yet come out as trans at the time, felt like he was losing control and didn’t understand what was happening to his body. ~NBC News

Stories like this make me think we have lost our minds. Does society accept this? Apparently so. But of course, our society is so intimidated we have become afraid of our own shadows. The Girl Scouts Organization, along with other women organizations, were intimidated into retracting their congratulations to Amy Coney Barrett on her recent confirmation to the United States Supreme Court. Seriously? We can’t congratulate a nominee who got confirmed to the court? Have we lost our minds?

The government is investigating the big tech companies because they are suppressing and censoring stories that they deem oppose the left’s narrative on politics. Since when is this news? If the American people would wake up it might become clear that this suppression and censorship is a normal function for today’s media. Anyone who believes anything the media says today is probably someone who has also lost their mind.

Losing your mind simply means you have lost the ability to think, to process, and to determine what is truth. Most people will believe any narrative that is the closest to their own worldview … whether it is true or not. Facts do not matter in anything anymore … it’s all about perception and agenda. Agenda? I believe there is an agenda designed to fill our minds with confusion and senseless information. Meaningful thinking has to be cultivated. Most of us form opinions based on the information we are subjected to every day. Media outlets pump millions of messages out every day, and those messages are based upon opinions … not fact, not truth. How much of what we take in is based upon a lie, misinformation, and even disinformation … all designed to attract our attention and convince us that what is being said is true?

We must have filters around this onslaught of information, or we will simply become a conduit of other people’s thoughts and opinions. As the Apostle Paul said, we are to renew our minds in thinking about what we need to do to please God and do His will. These filters are not only important for what we allow in from the world but also what we listen to from the church. Not all information from church leaders is Biblical … it too can be based upon opinion, tradition, and revelation. If we are to study to show ourselves approved, we need to evaluate all information by a strict standard of Biblical interpretation. As I have written before, much of what I have believed in the past has been re-evaluated and much of it removed because it came up short in being supported by the Bible.

Much of what is taught today in many church circles is a combination of personal awareness training, motivational techniques, prophetic opinion, and lastly Bible references. One has to evaluate the emphasis in all sermons and teachings and determine what is the bottom line of what is being said. Is it based upon opinion, personal experience, revelation, theological bias, or something else? What is the basis for the truth being shared?

Now, perfect sermons or teachings may not be possible, but testing all things should bring us to a discerning moment of accepting it as from God or from man:

1 Thessalonians 5 20Do not scoff at prophecies, 21but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good.

1 John 4:1 My dear friends, don’t believe everything you hear. Carefully weigh and examine what people tell you. Not everyone who talks about God comes from God. There are a lot of lying preachers loose in the world.

I sense that we are losing our minds because we don’t have a foundation of thought that is based upon God’s Word. God tells us repeatedly not to fear, not to be anxious, and not to lose heart. Standing for truth has to be the emphasis for believers and doing so without compromise or collusion with this world.

Losing our mind begins when we accept into our thinking the compromised slippery slope of public opinion. Public opinion influences us to develop a mindset that finds its emphasis on everything except God. To me, an example would be the influence of PBS. The emphasis is on more intellectual viewpoints and opinions. No God … just intellectual opinions. I have met so many Christians who like PBS as a stimulus to their thinking. Be careful with overcharged intellectual opinions that are not based upon God.

Losing our minds is a gradual progression of more of me and less of Him. As John the Baptist said:

John 3:30 He must increase, and I must decrease.

This is the antidote to the toxic world of our opinions.
