Sowing Turmoil in the Land

Hosea 4 1Hear the word of the Lord, O people of Israel! The Lord has brought charges against you, saying: “There is no faithfulness, no kindness, no knowledge of God in your land. 2You make vows and break them; you kill and steal and commit adultery. There is violence everywhere—one murder after another. 3That is why your land is in mourning, and everyone is wasting away. Even the wild animals, the birds of the sky, and the fish of the sea are disappearing.”

This Passage gives us insight into why Israel was suffering as a people. They chose to live apart from God and they mocked the justice that God laid out in His Word. The dictionary defines justice as just behavior or treatment, a genuine respect for people. It is the quality of being fair and reasonable.

God’s justice is one of His attributes and flows out of His Holiness. God is always just, and He never changes … His fairness and applied judgment are based upon it. God’s assessment of Israel was that they failed to be faithful to Him resulting in their reaping what they were sowing as a people.

Here is a list of conditions God says contribute to any people in a confused state. This list could be an overlay to what we see in America today, as we bear the results of what we have given ourselves to:

· No faithfulness

· No kindness

· No knowledge of God in the land

· You make vows and break them

· You kill

· You steal

· You commit adultery

· There is violence everywhere, murder after murder

Then God says, therefore, "your land is in mourning.”

It has been commonly said that you become what you give yourself to. If you are a glutton, you get fat. If you watch pornography, you become a sex addict. If you live to please yourself, you become a narcissist. God tells us this is the principle of reaping what you sow:

Galatians 6:7 Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.

God created universal principles, and this is one of them … justice is what you get by what you sow. You sow in hate … hate will be your justice in return. You sow in unforgiveness … unforgiveness will be your justice in return. You sow in immorality … immorality will be your justice in return.

The Prophet Hosea described the conditions that were being sown by the people in the land … the results were devastating. I have often wondered if they realized they were the creators of their own condition. I have been critical of American politics and believe that elections have ramifications. You sow by voting, and you reap what your vote for. Our problem isn't our leadership as much as it is our determination to do life without God. We don't sow our lives into God, so we shouldn't be surprised by the results of self-centered lives. Don't get me wrong, leadership is important in politics, in the church, in business, but it is the foundation in the lives of leaders that is the real issue in how we reap as a society.

The Prophet Hosea reiterates this idea of reaping what you sow:

Hosea 8:7 They have planted the wind and will harvest the whirlwind.

If you plant worthlessness (the wind) your results will be the consequences of a storm. Today in America we have a storm. We have become a lawless country whose democracy is being shortened by the absence of people who choose not to sow to the wind. I think America still is a good nation, but it is slowly being destroyed because we are sowing the wrong values into our nation.

Values are guidelines that help direct a person or a nation. Values can be misplaced and the results are accepted. For example, America says a woman has a right to terminate her baby and it is the value of personal choice. The problem? That choice has ramifications for an innocent life who has no way to object. The value of one person is the nightmare of another. Any society that kills its unborn is an anathema. We have accepted the wrong value for the wrong reasons. Abortion doesn’t just affect the mother and the unborn child … it is this spirit of murder that has permeated the land. You see that spirit unleased everywhere in America today. Don’t misunderstand what was said … it is this spirit of murder that abortion permits, accepts, and promotes that is killing people with bullets on our streets. Go back to Hosea and read it again … if you sow murder, then murder is what you reap.

The sad thing for me is that I write this stuff and it does not sink in, it does not permeate the conscience of people. Why do I know this? It was 1973 when Roe vs. Wade was enacted into law … this spirit of murder has never left the land and continues to escalate.

The turmoil in America is not hard to understand … we are reaping what we have sown. Is there a remedy? Of course! You simply change what you plant. If you sow in human effort, you reap the human effort. If you sow in God, you reap the benefits of the Divine.

Life is too short to sow the wrong crop, it’s time for a different harvest.
