I was asked, “How do you find hope in the kind of world we live in today?” Hope can be fleeting, it can seem like there is no Hope considering the racial tension, riots, looting, pandemic viruses, and hatred toward Authorities. I do believe the Bible is clear that the conditions around us will continue to decline because we have abandoned the Moral Compass that God has outlined in His Word.
Romans 13 9For the commandments say, You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet. These—and other such commandments—are summed up in this one commandment: Love your neighbor as yourself. 10Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law. 11This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. 13Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy. 14Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.
Prejudice, racism, hatred, confusion, the idols of opinion, and the resistance to the Truth of the Bible … these conditions have become a lethal cocktail for a society to rot from within. I recently replaced some boards that were rotting on my deck. I noticed that the majority of the rotting boards had areas on them that were fine, but the rotten parts of those boards made it unsafe, and if left unattended would rot out that entire area of the deck. Society is no different. We have some sections of our society that seem to be strong and not corrupted, but it is just a matter of time before they are affected. Let me give you an example of this.
During the recent riots and unrest because of the death of George Floyd, many Evangelical leaders abandoned their Call to be Peacemakers and opted to be another voice in the mass hysteria calling for Justice and Change. I understand the need for both, but Hope for either of these is questionable. Even if change happens structurally, if the heart isn’t changed, nothing will really change. How do I know that? When reviewing race relations since Martin Luther King, the conclusion is that not much has changed. That, of course, is obviously evident by our recent situation surrounding the death of George Floyd. Culture can change structures, but it cannot change the heart. People must be changed from the inside out; otherwise the rot on the inside will affect everything on the outside … we see that all around us today.
As Christians, our Calling is to be a Voice in the midst of this confusion with the Hope that change can happen in the hearts of the people, but it cannot be led by culture. Today culture leads with emotion and hysteria, it defines life by equal rights and opportunity. These are social constructs that may change circumstances, but if there is no heart change that is driven by Mercy, Forgiveness, Grace, Honor, and the Fear of God, systems of change will always break down and reveal the rot that is in a person’s life or in the corruption within the changed system. You may disagree with me, but I am only telling you what the Bible says. So, let’s review.
It continues to get dark. No relief outside of Jesus Returning and taking control:
Matthew 24:22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
Nothing really changes without a heart change. God must control the heart in order for lasting change to take hold of a person or a society:
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
Christians are to be the catalyst for change by putting God First … not social justice. Social justice can be useful in bringing a better environment but without the Message of Hope in Jesus Christ, social change is ultimately dead in the water:
1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
Let me also put into perspective the death of George Floyd. Any system is wrong when it perpetuates the death of anyone. Police officers who abuse their Authority, as was done in the case of George Floyd, need to be brought to Justice. There is no debate about this for me. However, every day in this Country we kill thousands of black babies by abortion and no one bats an eye. I want to know where is the Justice for this atrocity? Perhaps you may think it’s unfair of me to bring this perspective to mind, but death is death, isn’t it? I think we have cultivated a culture of death in this Country, where we pick and choose which deaths are more valuable for our cause.
The nearly nine minutes of George Floyd’s death is now being used to remind us of the time it took for him to die. How long does it take to abort a black baby? Abortions take between 5-10 minutes. I hope when we stand in silence for 9 minutes for the inhuman death of George Floyd, that we will also be reminded of the inhuman death of innocent black babies, the victims of abortion. Our Justice is not Righteous. God condemns the death of innocent lives, whether a 46-year-old black man, or a defenseless child whose life is being taken away before they are even born.
So, when we want to Stand for Justice, let’s see Justice in a holistic sense and Stand for the kind of Justice God gives to us. His Justice is based upon Mercy and Grace for all who have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God.
Let’s Pray for God’s Wisdom, to temper and challenge our emotions in a day when we need direction and not the reactions of angry people. Anger is the rot of a heart unbridled by God’s Grace.
