It’s All Chasing the Wind

The big theme these days is ‘America has no king.’ People expressing their distaste and anger over a president who they think has gone too far in his administration policies. A real King named Solomon had a saying, “It’s all chasing the wind.” In time, this king emphasis will go away, and there will come another theme that will take its place and continue chasing the wind. I think the Prodigal Son Parable has something to say to us about chasing the wrong things.
The older son in the Parable of the Prodigal Son is a stable, faithful, obedient, and reverent son whose opinion of himself, compared to his younger brother, was obscured by his faithfulness to his father. We often lay claim to how faithful we are to God, not realizing that our faithfulness must love what God loves. Faithfulness isn’t about our performance, which is how the elder son saw himself. Faithfulness to God is about dedicating ourselves to what God cares about, and if we say we love God, then we love what God loves. He loves people where they are at, and when someone comes to repentance and to faith, that means Heaven rejoices. Nothing is more important to God than to see people return to Him. God targets sinners … because He loves them. ~Larry Kutzler, Facebook Post
The key phrase for me in this post is, ‘We need to love what God loves.” In other words, we need to chase after the pursuit of Him, not themes of political rhetoric, which is chasing the wind. I guess my most disappointment comes when I read about professing Christians who have such a strong opinion that they side with people who have perpetrated this drama of ‘America has no King.’ The Prodigal Son had no discernment … he simply wanted what he thought was his right and decide to chase the wind. Of course, the wind brought him to poverty of mind and body, and fortunately, he eventually came to his senses.
Chasing the wind doesn’t bring you any closer to the ideal dream we all want for our lives. As Christians, we don’t pursue the ideals in this life, good or bad, the only ideal worth pursuing is what Jesus told us to pursue in His Word. Let me share with you what Jesus thought about chasing the wind:
Matthew 7:24-27 Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise, and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.
I rest my case.
