The Bible tells us that God is not found in the wind or the fire, but in the still small voice. This is one of the reasons that I believe Jesus will not be found in the difficult overreaching theology, He resides in the simple. Recently, I told a group of people that most of my theology has been replaced by the simple understanding of Jesus. I know that will bug the theologians who think theology rules the Kingdom, but they are wrong. Most theology is a construct of theologians derived from the Scriptures but not taught directly from the Scriptures. Study the life of Christ … He had a simple theology of knowing and doing God’s will. The best theology is the still small voice because it is simply Jesus saying, “I am here.” ~Larry Kutzler, Facebook Post

I wrote this Facebook post because I have been concerned about the complexity of theology and the simple message of Jesus. God can be complex because He is God, but that is not how He wants to be known. His desire is to be known by the simple trust of a child, to the powerful who reign over nations.

1 Kings 19:11-13 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

God wasn’t making Himself know in the demonstrative forces of wind, or the earthquake, or the fire … He was making Himself known in the quietness of a whisper. God can use the demonstrative forces of nature to speak to us, but He chooses a more personal way … the whisper of His voice. Theology was never the focus of Jesus … He never once made a Calvinistic or Arminian statement about salvation. He talked a lot about losing yourself to the Gospel rather than using the Gospel to gain prosperity. He certainly wasn’t afraid to heal the sick, cast out demons, or push back on religious bigotry … He clearly demonstrated what He believed. Jesus is clearly our theology, and He is not complicated. He wasn’t a Baptist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, or Evangelical Free, He wasn’t even Christian … He was a Jew. How did we get so far away from who this Jesus was, and what this Jesus did?

When the Voice asked, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” I would put your name in there. “What are you doing here, Larry?” Well, I would say, “I am here to here to hear the whisper of God.”

One of my goals in life is to bring the message of the Gospel back to its roots. We are followers of Christ … not followers of a denomination. We are followers of Christ, and not known for our theological pedigree. We are followers of Christ, and not proponents of social or political movements. As a follower of Christ, we deny self, pick up our cross, and follow Christ. Perhaps that is something He might whisper to us, “Are you following Me, or something else?”

That still small Voice reminds us, “I am all the theology you need.” ~Jesus
